Break the Chain Campaign
The Humane Society has begun a new campaign called “Break the Chain,” in order to educate people of the danger and cruelty behind tethering your dog outside.
The campaign’s spokesdog is a Doberman named Nikki, who was rescued after experiencing this type of abuse. Nikki was rescued after spending her entire life chained to a tree. When she was found, her food bowl was covered in green mold and her water dish was empty. Nikki was chained as a puppy and as she grew, her collar was not loosened and became embedded in her neck. After her rescue, the collar had to be surgically removed. Nikki has since been adopted by a loving couple and has been asked to become the poster dog for “Break the Chain.” She and her human companions will travel North America, educating children and dog owners about the dangers of chaining dogs outside, while attempting to change tethering laws. There are many obstacles to overcome, as distinctions need to be made between what is acceptable and unacceptable.
Tethering a dog in humane conditions, for a short amount of time is legal, as opposed to a dog that is repeatedly tethered, or permanently tethered and/or neglected.
