Dog Poisonings in Toronto

Over the past weekend, several dogs in Toronto’s High Park ingested anti-freeze and are now in serious but stable condition.

The dogs ingested the anti-freeze by drinking out of water troughs in the High Park off-leash area. It is highly likely that these animals were poisoned on purpose. The water troughs have since been removed and the park has been closed until a police investigation is complete. Five dogs are being treated at a local emergency pet clinic, but one of them is sadly not expected to survive. Anti-freeze can cause kidney failure within several hours of ingestion. Torontonians are being cautioned, but told not to panic. It is a wise idea to keep your dog on a leash at all times until the investigation is closed.

Veterinarian Karen Nasir recommends that dog parks should be carefully monitored and examined daily to prevent incidents such as this from occurring again.
