How to Approach Guide Dogs

More guide dogs are being introduced each year than ever before. These magnificent animals guide the blind, deaf, disabled and even children with autism. Trainer Susan Blakely would like to offer some advice on how to behave around guide dogs.

The most important thing to remember is never to pet or feed a guide dog when it is working. It is hard to resist such cute and lovable animals, but these dogs have a job to do, and cannot be distracted. They are highly trained and follow strict diets to keep them healthy, so please ask permission first. Generally, when a guide dog takes its harness off, it is just like every other pup in the world, and that’s the time to play and cuddle. Remember that people who are assisted by guide dogs value their independence, and may be offended if you offer help. Refrain from asking, unless it is obvious that help is needed.

Be respectful, and wait until a guide dog is off its’ harness before showering them with much deserved love.
