Harsher Fines for Off-Leash Dogs

The Canadian Humane Society is looking to increase the fines for off-leash dogs outside of private property or designated areas.

The number of dogs found off-leash in parks and on trails has increased approximately 50% since last summer. It is believed that with the large number of off-leash dog parks emerging all over Ontario, people are generally becoming confused about where their pets are permitted to roam. By keeping your dog on a leash at all times, pedestrians, bikers and children are safer, and the likelihood of an accident occurring is diminished. It is safer for the public and much safer for dogs. A Peterborough officer this weekend found over 60% of dogs on his assigned trail were found off their leashes. The officer did not fine any of the owners, and claims he would rather educate people than fine them.

However, The Humane Society claims that if the number continues to grow, they will have no choice but to distribute harsher fines.
